No One Left Behind: A Journey Back to Health and Hope

"At 38, Jaya Bahadur Syintan described himself as a 'landless, flood-affected victim with no family.' Grappling with severe, undiagnosed tuberculosis that drove him into deep poverty, MRC Nepal stepped in to help him reclaim his health and his future."

When 38-year-old Jaya Bahadur Syintan from rural Makawanpur introduced himself, his words were steeped in despair. He described himself bluntly: “a landless poor man with no family, a victim of the floods.”

Seven months prior, a persistent, heavy cough and fever began to relentlessly drain his energy, accompanied by a sudden, complete loss of appetite. Over the span of just six months, his undiagnosed condition deteriorated so drastically that he lost nearly a third of his body weight. Unable to work or provide, his tragic circumstance fractured his family, leaving him entirely alone.

Desperate for relief, Jaya visited a local health post where he received a series of misdiagnoses for minor ailments. He was prescribed over-the-counter fever reducers, vitamins, and cough syrup. Ultimately, Jaya spent roughly NPR 30,000 (over USD 420)—a devastating sum for a struggling laborer—on treatments that provided absolutely no relief and instead drove him deeper into profound poverty.

A Critical Intervention

Awareness of Jaya’s critical situation reached MRC Nepal through community members who had heard the organization’s widespread STOP TB awareness campaign. When the MRC field team arrived at his hut, Jaya was severely emaciated, bedridden, and barely able to speak. Recognizing the unmistakable signs of advanced Tuberculosis, the MRC staff sprang into immediate action. They safely transported him to the local health post, instantly securing a referral to the District Hospital for a comprehensive TB diagnosis.

The diagnosis was confirmed, and Jaya was immediately enrolled in a structured treatment program. Since that life-saving intervention, he has maintained a strict regimen, taking his TB medication regularly. Slowly but surely, the heavy cough has faded, his appetite has returned, and he is steadily regaining a healthy weight.

“Because of their intervention, I am alive. I survived, and now I can dream of a brighter future.”

Reflecting on his journey from the brink, Mr. Jaya expressed his profound gratitude: “I give admiring thanks to God, the Stop TB Partnership, and MRC Nepal. They didn’t just provide medical help; they gave me a completely new life.”
